- James Mitchell Varnum was Major General of Rhode Island Militia. General Varnum served with distinction at the siege of Boston, the battles at Long Island, White Plains, Red Bank, at Valley Forge and the battle of Rhode Island. This organization is dedicated to his memory.

Mount Independence State Historic Site

- Atop this rugged promontory along the Vermont shore of Lake Champlain, American Revolutionary troops built a fort complex to guard against a British attack from Canada. The troops named it Mount Independence in honor of the Declaration of Independence.
